About the treatment
A biopsy allows selected tissue from inside the mouth to be examined in a laboratory. It may be recommended for a lump, patch, ulcer or another change that needs a clearer diagnosis.
Some biopsies take a small part of an area, while others remove a whole small lesion. Your clinician will explain what is recommended and why.

Assessment-led care
A dental laser may be considered for removing selected soft tissue, but it is not the appropriate method for every biopsy. The site, size and diagnostic requirements all influence how tissue should be sampled.
The removed tissue is sent to a laboratory for examination. The laser does not provide the diagnosis. Dr Tom Metselaar (GDC 296169) and the team will explain the results pathway and any follow-up you need.

Tissue Biopsy FAQs
Your consultation is the right place to discuss suitability, alternatives and what your own care may involve.
An oral biopsy removes a small tissue sample, or sometimes a whole small area, so it can be examined in a laboratory and a diagnosis can be made.
