About the treatment
Obstructive sleep apnoea is a medical condition in which breathing repeatedly narrows or stops during sleep. Snoring can be one sign, but it does not confirm a diagnosis. Other possible signs include gasping, witnessed pauses in breathing, waking with a dry mouth or headache, and feeling unusually tired during the day.
A dental assessment can review your teeth, gums, jaw and bite and identify factors that may affect whether a dental appliance could be considered. If you have not had a medical assessment, or your symptoms suggest possible sleep apnoea, we may recommend speaking with your GP or an appropriate sleep service.

Assessment-led care
A custom-made mandibular advancement appliance holds the lower jaw in a forward position during sleep. This may help keep the airway more open for some adults with diagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea or primary snoring. It does not treat every cause of disturbed sleep and is not suitable for everyone.
The decision depends on factors including your diagnosis, the severity of the condition, your teeth and gums, jaw health and medical advice. We will explain alternatives, limitations and possible side effects. If you already use CPAP or another prescribed treatment, do not change it without speaking to the clinician responsible for your sleep care.

Personal, assessment-led care
"Snoring can be more than a nuisance, so we assess it properly. Where a medical opinion is needed, we arrange it before considering any appliance."

Sleep Apnoea FAQs
Your consultation is the right place to discuss suitability, alternatives and what your own care may involve.
No. Sleep apnoea is a medical condition and a formal diagnosis usually requires assessment by an appropriate medical or sleep service. A dental appointment can identify signs or symptoms that warrant further investigation and help you understand the next step.
