About the treatment

What Is Teeth Grinding?

Teeth grinding, known clinically as bruxism, is involuntary clenching, gnashing or grinding of the teeth. It can occur during the day or during sleep, and some people do not realise they are doing it until symptoms or signs of wear are noticed. Repeated clenching or grinding may place extra strain on the teeth, jaw joints and surrounding muscles. Possible signs include worn enamel, cracks, sensitivity, jaw discomfort or morning headaches. An assessment can help distinguish bruxism from other causes and guide a plan to protect the teeth, manage symptoms and discuss any existing damage.

Causes & Risk Factors

Bruxism can have more than one contributing factor. Stress and anxiety may play a part, and some people notice more clenching during periods of pressure. Sleep bruxism can also occur alongside disrupted sleep or sleep-related breathing concerns. If symptoms such as loud snoring, pauses in breathing or marked daytime tiredness are present, we may suggest speaking to your GP or an appropriate sleep service. Caffeine, alcohol, smoking and certain medicines may also be relevant. During your assessment, we discuss your symptoms, medical history, sleep and lifestyle before recommending dental care. This helps us focus on protecting the teeth while any wider health concerns are considered by the appropriate clinician.

Bruxism (Teeth Grinding) FAQs

Questions about bruxism (teeth grinding)

Your consultation is the right place to discuss suitability, alternatives and what your own care may involve.

Teeth grinding (bruxism) can have several contributing factors. These may include stress, disrupted sleep, certain medicines and lifestyle factors such as caffeine, alcohol or smoking. There is not always one identifiable cause, so an assessment is useful before deciding how best to manage it.
