About the treatment

A removable brace with a clear home routine

A myofunctional brace is a removable appliance that sits over the teeth. For selected growing children, it may form part of an orthodontic plan that also includes simple exercises, habit support and regular reviews.

It is not a substitute for a full assessment of your child's teeth, bite and stage of development. We will explain the role it may play, the routine it requires at home and whether monitoring, fixed braces, aligners or another option may be more appropriate.

Assessment-led care

What we assess and what happens next

An assessment may be helpful if your child regularly breathes through their mouth, rests with their lips apart, pushes their tongue forwards when swallowing, has an ongoing thumb or finger habit, or is developing crowding or a bite concern. These signs do not automatically mean that a myofunctional brace is suitable.

Dr Adam Carstairs, Orthodontic Dentist (GDC No. 75063), will assess your child's teeth, bite, oral habits and stage of growth before explaining the options. Persistent mouth breathing, snoring or sleep concerns can have causes that a dental appliance cannot treat, so medical or ENT assessment may also be recommended.

Personal, assessment-led care

"Myofunctional braces aren't right for every child, and I will always say so. When the timing and habits line up, they can be a very gentle way to guide growth."
