About the treatment

Paediatric Sedation for Children

When your child feels frightened about dental treatment, it can be difficult for the whole family. At Danbury Dental Care, we offer paediatric sedation options that may help selected children manage the care they need.

Inhalation sedation through a small nose mask may be an appropriate starting point for some children. Dr Shivani Popat (GDC 278152) provides children's inhalation sedation with a calm, friendly approach.

For selected cases, paediatric IV sedation may also be appropriate when a deeper level of support is needed. We usually consider this for children who are typically over 20kg and only after a careful consultation.

Serving families from across Essex, Kent, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk, we provide inhalation sedation from £250 per hour and paediatric IV sedation from £950.

Two Sedation Options, One Careful Decision

Some children are able to manage treatment with a small nose mask and inhalation sedation. Others may need a different level of support because of their anxiety, the planned treatment or difficulty tolerating the mask.

That is why we assess each child individually. During consultation we look at age, weight, medical history, treatment type, previous dental experiences and how your child is coping with the idea of treatment.

Dr Shivani Popat graduated with Honours from King's College London and provides sedation care for anxious adults and children. Inhalation sedation may be considered first for many younger children. For selected children, typically over 20kg, paediatric IV sedation may be appropriate. We will explain the expected benefits, limitations and aftercare before you decide how to proceed.

Personal, assessment-led care

"A child's first experiences of the dentist shape a lifetime. Sedation is only ever part of a wider plan to help them feel safe, calm and in control."

Children's Dental Sedation FAQs

Questions about children's dental sedation

Your consultation is the right place to discuss suitability, alternatives and what your own care may involve.

Inhalation sedation has a long history of use in dentistry and may be suitable for many children after assessment. Your child remains awake and able to respond, and the effects usually wear off soon after the nose mask is removed.
