About the treatment

What are Fixed Braces?

Fixed braces use metal or ceramic brackets and a wire to apply controlled forces to teeth. Because they remain attached, they do not rely on remembering to wear and replace an aligner, but careful cleaning around the brackets is essential.

Dr Adam Carstairs (GDC 75063) and Dr Nadyn Hemami (GDC 213465) provide orthodontic care at Danbury Dental Care. Fixed braces can be considered for a range of alignment and bite concerns. The suitable appliance, likely duration and limitations depend on the assessment. Metal and ceramic brackets are available for selected cases.

Planned Tooth Movement and Regular Reviews

Fixed braces give the clinician control over several types of tooth movement and may be recommended when removable aligners are not the preferred option. This does not make them universally better, and each appliance has different advantages and responsibilities.

Regular reviews are used to change or adjust the wire and monitor tooth movement, gum health and cleaning. Ceramic brackets may be less noticeable than metal brackets, but their suitability, appearance, care and cost should be discussed for your case.

"Fixed braces are still one of the most reliable ways to straighten teeth. I plan every case around the whole bite, not just the front six teeth."

Fixed Braces FAQs

Questions about fixed braces

Your consultation is the right place to discuss suitability, alternatives and what your own care may involve.

You will feel mild pressure or tenderness for a day or two after each tightening - that is a sign the braces are working. Over-the-counter pain relief and a soft-food day normally keep things comfortable.
