You have been putting off the dentist for months, maybe years. Every time you think about booking an appointment, your stomach tightens. The sounds, the smells, the feeling of being stuck in that chair - it all feels like too much. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. And sedation dentistry might be the thing that finally gets you through the door.
But what does it actually feel like? That is the question most people really want answered before they commit. So let us walk you through it honestly, based on what our patients tell us every week.
How Sedation Feels When It Starts
The first thing most patients notice is a wave of calm. Your shoulders drop. Your jaw unclenches. The racing thoughts slow down.
The exact sensation depends on which type of sedation you are having:
- Nitrous oxide (laughing gas): You breathe it in through a small nose mask, and within a minute or two you feel light, slightly floaty, and pleasantly relaxed. Some people describe a gentle tingling in their fingers or a warm, dreamy feeling.
- IV sedation: A small cannula is placed in your arm or hand. Within moments, a deep relaxation washes over you. Most patients say something like "I felt my eyes getting heavy, and then it was over." You drift into a twilight state where you are technically conscious but deeply unconcerned about what is happening.
- Oral sedation: You take a tablet before your appointment. The effects build gradually over 30 to 60 minutes, leaving you drowsy and relaxed by the time treatment begins.
None of these feel scary. If anything, the most common reaction we hear is "I wish I had done this sooner."
Will I Feel Pain During the Procedure?
No. Sedation works alongside local anaesthetic, so you get the best of both worlds - your anxiety is managed by the sedative, and the treatment area is completely numbed.
You might be aware of some pressure or gentle movement in your mouth, but it should not bother you. Many IV sedation patients do not even remember this part at all.
How Aware Will I Be?
This depends on the type and depth of sedation:
| Sedation Type | Level of Awareness | Memory of Procedure |
|---|---|---|
| Nitrous oxide | Awake and relaxed, fully aware | Usually remember most of it |
| Oral sedation | Drowsy, reduced awareness | Patchy memory |
| IV sedation | Twilight state, minimal awareness | Little to no memory |
With IV sedation, you can still respond to simple instructions from your dentist (like "open a little wider"), but you are unlikely to remember doing so. It is a strange but reassuring sensation - your body cooperates while your mind takes a break.
What Does Waking Up from Sedation Feel Like?
Nitrous oxide clears your system fast. Within five minutes of the mask coming off, most patients feel completely normal and can drive themselves home.
IV sedation is different. You will come round feeling groggy, like you have just woken from a deep nap. Time feels compressed - a 90-minute procedure might feel like it lasted five minutes. You may feel a bit woozy or have a dry mouth. These feelings pass within a few hours.
Oral sedation recovery sits somewhere in between. Expect drowsiness for several hours afterwards.
With both IV and oral sedation, you will need someone to collect you from the clinic and stay with you for the rest of the day. No driving, no big decisions, no cooking. Think of it as a prescribed afternoon on the sofa.
Sedation Dentistry for Nervous Patients
If dental phobia has kept you away from the dentist for years, sedation is not just about comfort - it is about access. It gives you a way back into dental care that feels safe and manageable.
Here is what makes a real difference for nervous patients:
- You stay in control. You can raise your hand at any point, and the team will pause. Sedation relaxes you; it does not take away your ability to communicate.
- The environment matters. At Danbury Dental Care, we have designed everything from our waiting area to our treatment rooms to feel calm and private. Soft lighting, comfortable seating, and a team trained specifically to look after anxious patients.
- There is no judgement. We see patients every week who have not been to a dentist in 10, 15, even 20 years. Our only goal is to help you get comfortable and get the care you need.
Many of our patients who started with sedation now attend routine appointments without it, simply because they built positive associations with dental visits. That is the long game - not just getting through today’s treatment, but changing how you feel about the dentist altogether.
Sedation for Complex or Lengthy Treatments
Sedation is also practical, not just comforting. If you need extensive work - dental implants, multiple extractions, or a full course of restorative treatment - sedation lets your dentist accomplish more in fewer visits.
This is particularly helpful if you:
- Struggle to keep your mouth open for long periods
- Have a strong gag reflex
- Need several procedures done at once
- Experience acute dental pain and need prompt, thorough treatment
By reducing your awareness of time and discomfort, sedation allows your clinical team to work efficiently while you rest.
Types of Sedation at Danbury Dental Care
We offer two main sedation options in-house, delivered by our own qualified sedation specialists:
IV Sedation
A sedative is delivered directly into your bloodstream through a small cannula. This is our most popular option for patients with significant dental anxiety or those undergoing longer procedures. You will feel deeply relaxed and have little memory of the treatment afterwards. Your sedation level can be adjusted throughout the procedure for maximum safety and comfort.
Inhalation Sedation (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide is breathed in through a nose mask. It is lighter than IV sedation, making it ideal for shorter procedures or for patients (including children) who need mild anxiety relief. The effects wear off within minutes, so recovery is quick.
We are one of the few practices in Essex offering both adult and paediatric sedation in-house. Having our own sedation specialists on the team means better continuity of care - the clinician who sedates you is the same person who knows your history, your anxieties, and your treatment plan.
What to Expect Before, During, and After Your Visit
Before Your Appointment
- Consultation: We will review your medical history, talk through your concerns, and recommend the right sedation type for you.
- Preparation: You may be asked to avoid eating for a set period before IV sedation. We will give you clear written instructions.
- Arrival: On the day, we do a quick check of your vital signs and answer any last questions before we begin.
During Treatment
- Sedation is administered. For IV sedation, a cannula is placed. For inhalation, a nose mask is fitted.
- You relax. Most patients close their eyes and drift. Your dentist and the sedation team monitor you continuously.
- Treatment happens. You may feel light pressure or movement, but no pain. Time passes quickly.
After Treatment
- Recovery: You will rest in a comfortable recovery area until you are ready to leave. For laughing gas, this is just a few minutes. For IV sedation, allow around 30 to 60 minutes.
- Going home: A friend or family member must collect you if you have had IV or oral sedation. Plan a quiet evening at home.
- Aftercare: We provide clear written instructions covering pain management, what to eat, and what to watch for. Our team is always available by phone if you have questions.
Costs and Payment Options
Sedation adds an additional cost to your dental treatment. Here is a rough guide to UK sedation pricing:
| Sedation Type | Typical Cost Per Session |
|---|---|
| Inhalation sedation (laughing gas) | £50 - £100 |
| Oral sedation | £100 - £250 |
| IV sedation | £200 - £500 |
The total will also depend on the dental treatment being carried out. We always provide a full cost breakdown before you commit to anything.
Why Our Costs Represent Good Value
- Fewer visits: Sedation lets us complete more treatment per appointment, saving you time and repeat visit fees.
- In-house team: We do not outsource our sedation, which keeps costs lower and care more consistent.
- Flexible payment: We accept major credit cards and offer finance options. Our team can walk you through what works for your budget.
We are upfront about pricing because we know cost is a real concern. No surprises, no hidden fees.
