Watching your child become distressed at the dentist is tough. Maybe they've refused to open their mouth, cried through appointments, or developed a fear that makes even routine check-ups impossible. You're not alone - dental anxiety affects around 1 in 10 children in the UK, and for some, it prevents them from getting the care they need.

Paediatric sedation dentistry offers a safe, effective way through it. It's not about "putting them to sleep." It's about creating a calm experience where your child feels secure, the dentist can work gently and thoroughly, and you can feel confident their oral health is being looked after.

Has Your Child Struggled with Dental Treatment?

Children express dental anxiety in lots of different ways. Your child might:

  • Refuse to enter the treatment room or sit in the chair
  • Clench their jaw shut or turn their head away
  • Cry, shake, or become rigid with fear
  • Complain of stomach aches or feel unwell before appointments
  • Show panic even during routine examinations

Why it happens

Dental anxiety in children can come from a previous uncomfortable experience, fear of unfamiliar environments, sensory sensitivities (bright lights, sounds, textures), or simply a natural cautiousness. Some children have no specific trigger at all.

Why it matters

Untreated dental anxiety leads to avoided appointments, untreated decay, emergency pain, and potentially a lifelong fear of dental care. Early positive experiences - even with sedation support - can break this cycle and help your child build confidence for the future.

What Is Paediatric Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses carefully controlled medications to help children relax during dental treatment. Your child remains conscious, can respond to instructions, and breathes independently. Sedation simply reduces anxiety, discomfort, and awareness, making treatment manageable for both the child and the dentist.

In the UK, paediatric sedation follows strict guidelines from the Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD), the General Dental Council (GDC), and the Department of Health.

At Danbury Dental Care, we offer inhalation sedation for many children and can also discuss paediatric IV sedation in selected cases when a deeper level of support may be needed.

How inhalation sedation works

Nitrous oxide (often called "happy air" or "laughing gas" by children) is a colourless, sweet-smelling gas inhaled through a small nasal mask. It's been used safely in dentistry for over 150 years and is the most common form of sedation for anxious children in the UK.

Within 2 to 3 minutes, your child will feel:

  • Warm, relaxed, and calm
  • A gentle tingling or "floaty" sensation
  • Less aware of sights, sounds, and discomfort
  • Still awake and able to hear and respond, but comfortably detached

Most children describe it as feeling dreamy or like being wrapped in a soft blanket. The effect wears off within minutes once the mask is removed, and your child can usually resume normal activities shortly after.

When paediatric IV sedation may be considered

In selected cases, paediatric IV sedation may be appropriate for children who need a deeper level of relaxation than a nose mask is likely to provide. We usually consider this only after a careful consultation and typically for children over 20kg.

This is not the right choice for every child. The decision depends on medical history, the treatment needed, how your child copes with dental care, and whether a lighter sedation route is likely to work well.

What we can do under sedation

With the right sedation plan, we can comfortably perform:

  • Full dental examinations
  • Professional cleans and fluoride treatments
  • Fillings and minor restorative work
  • Orthodontic extractions (removing baby teeth to support braces or alignment)
  • Fissure sealants and preventive treatments

For more complex procedures or children with severe anxiety, we may discuss paediatric IV sedation in selected cases. If that is not suitable, we may talk about referral to a specialist paediatric sedation service or general anaesthesia in a hospital setting.

Why Sedation Is About More Than Just the Gas

The medication is only part of the equation. A successful experience depends on:

  1. Rapport and trust - our team takes time to meet your child at their level, using child-friendly language and never rushing
  2. A calm environment - gentle lighting, soft voices, and ensuring your child feels in control. They can ask questions, take breaks, and signal if they need a pause
  3. Communication with you - we involve you at every step so you know what to expect and how to support your child
  4. Clinical expertise - with your child relaxed, the dentist can work carefully, thoroughly, and without causing distress

This combination of medication, empathy, and expertise is what transforms a frightening visit into a manageable, even positive, memory.

What to Expect: Your Child's Sedation Journey

Before the appointment

  • Consultation - we discuss your child's medical history, anxiety triggers, and treatment needs
  • Preparation - your child may need to avoid eating for a short time beforehand (we'll provide clear guidance). Talk positively about the visit using phrases like "the dentist will help your teeth feel better"

During the appointment

  • Introduction - we explain the agreed sedation plan in calm, parent-friendly language
  • Settling in - if inhalation sedation is the right fit, we introduce the nose mask gently. If paediatric IV sedation has been planned, we guide you through the extra preparation and escort requirements
  • Treatment - with your child relaxed, the necessary care is performed as gently and efficiently as possible
  • Monitoring - your child's comfort and wellbeing are checked throughout

After the appointment

  • After inhalation sedation, the effects wear off within 5 to 10 minutes of removing the mask
  • After paediatric IV sedation, recovery takes longer and your child will need a quieter rest of the day
  • We provide aftercare instructions and, if extractions were performed, guidance on managing tenderness at home
  • Praise your child - positive reinforcement builds confidence for future visits

Is Sedation Safe for My Child?

Yes, when the right child is matched to the right sedation route and treatment is carefully planned. Inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide is recognised as one of the safest sedation techniques for children. Selected-case paediatric IV sedation can also be appropriate, but only after a careful assessment of suitability. SAAD sets comprehensive safety standards and training requirements for sedation practitioners across the UK.

Serious complications are extremely rare. Your child:

  • Remains conscious and breathing independently
  • Can respond to instructions
  • Receives continuous monitoring
  • Recovers rapidly with no lasting effects

Who is sedation suitable for?

Most children aged 3 and older can have inhalation sedation, provided they can breathe through their nose and cooperate with wearing the mask. It's particularly helpful for children with mild to moderate dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still, or sensory sensitivities.

Paediatric IV sedation may be considered for selected children who need deeper support and are typically over 20kg. The final decision always depends on a full consultation and clinical assessment.

When sedation may not be appropriate

We assess suitability during your consultation. Sedation may not be suitable if your child has severe nasal congestion, certain respiratory conditions, or specific medical complexities. In these cases, we'll discuss alternatives including referral for hospital-based general anaesthesia if needed.
